Public Safety

As a mother of a young family and the wife of a former financial crimes and public corruption prosecutor, Barisa deeply values the importance of a safe and just community. Public safety is a top priority in her work on the City Council, where she has consistently advocated for initiatives that protect families and businesses alike. Barisa is also passionately committed to fighting hate in all its forms, with a particular focus on combating anti-Semitism. Drawing on her husband’s expertise and her own dedication to justice and equality, Barisa is determined to ensure that Highland Park remains a secure, inclusive, and nurturing community where children can grow up and thrive.

Business & Economic Development

With a young family to support, Barisa is acutely aware of the need for a strong, vibrant local economy. Her experience with the Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization at the U.S. General Services Administration highlights her dedication to helping small businesses succeed. Barisa’s work has focused on guiding businesses through federal procurement processes, overcoming bureaucratic hurdles, and providing essential resources to ensure they thrive. She is also deeply mindful of the importance of diversity in business development, striving to create opportunities for all members of the community, regardless of background, to contribute to and benefit from Highland Park’s economic growth. Barisa believes that a prosperous and inclusive business community is key to Highland Park’s future, benefiting all families.

Planning & Design

Barisa’s leadership in planning and design is informed by her desire to create a community that is welcoming and functional for families like her own. Her work with the Planning and Design Commission for Highland Park has been pivotal in shaping developments that reflect the city’s values and needs. With strategic experience from the City Treasurer’s Office, The White House Office of Presidential Personnel, and Obama for America, Barisa is committed to ensuring that Highland Park’s growth is thoughtful, sustainable, and enhances the quality of life for all residents, particularly young families.

Environmental Sustainability

As a mother, Barisa is passionate about leaving a healthy environment for future generations. She is committed to implementing policies that promote environmental sustainability, reduce the city’s carbon footprint, and preserve green spaces where families can enjoy nature. Barisa believes that a sustainable approach to growth and development is essential to ensuring that Highland Park remains a beautiful and livable community for her children and all residents.
